John Margolies

Photographer John Margolies documents the commercial architecture and design lining America’s “highways and byways,” exploring the changing landscape and open-road automobile culture that swept America in the middle of the 20th century. His imagery is both objective and nostalgic, with subjects including mini golf courses, drive-in movie theaters, and the sort of empty small-town main streets suggesting bygone times, as in "Photographs from Roadside America" (1980). Margolies has also lectured on the topic of architectural change, a theme poignantly illustrated in his work.
